Matt Rocks with Hendrix!
Usually we post our ‘kids photography’ work over on the Katie Finn Photography blog. A couple of things about this shoot made me want to share it here as well.
Those of you who have been keeping up to date with us will know that I’m more of a video guy than photographer. About 6 months ago I bought a D90, mainly for the video features. Turns out the D90 is pretty hopeless for video so I started shooting some photos instead.
6 months later, with some lessons from Katie plus a reasonable number of shoots under my belt, I can safely say I’ve been absolutely smitten by photography.
I think the decisive moment came back in March during this ‘lifestyle’ shoot with Sarah, Greg and their rockin’ son Hendrix. Whether it was the 5am start, or that I wore my pyjamas to the shoot, or not taking any lenses apart from my 50mm 1.4 – I’m not sure. For the first time I was ‘in the zone’.
No fumbling with the dials. Just instinctive and natural. The clincher came as we flipped through the photos on the back of the camera, I couldn’t believe they were my images.
A photographer is born!
Here’s the other thing that this post brought to mind. Something so special to us about Shadowplay, and why we choose to work with a limited number of couples, is the relationships and friendships we make along the way. Katie and I also did the photos+video for Sarah and Greg’s wedding. For us, it’s not just about the photography but also about connection.
Thanks to Katie for believing in me and showing me the way. And thanks for putting up with my silly “my-photos-are-better-than-yours” competitiveness at every shoot.
Anyway, onto the photos! I’m super proud of this shoot and I hope you like it too!

Roger and Hayley – Engagement Shoot!
Roger and Hayley met at youth group when they were 12 years old. They lived 15 houses apart and every morning Roger would stand at his bedroom window and wave to Hayley as she went past on the school bus. They would also write messages to each other on big signs and hold them up for each other to read.
Over time Roger and Hayley became best friends, and on Roger’s 16th Birthday he finally asked Hayley out.
Hayley told me the story of their first kiss … “Our first kiss consisted of running through the playground, sitting on a swing and looking up at ‘our’ stars right above us in the sky. Just as our lips touched, all the sprinklers around us popped up!! And we got saturated!! It was hilarious! *massive grin* The best part was after sitting back down from laughing so hard, Roger said in this mesmerized voice, ‘I just kissed Hayley Robertson …’ I was laughing at him and he looked at me, smiled, and said, ‘This is a story to tell our grandchildren!!’”
It’s been so lovely being friends with Roger and Hayley over the years. I photographed both of their formals, now their engagement and in under a month Matt and I will be their wedding photographers! We feel so privileged to be part of their love story.
So, here are some photos of possible the most gorgeous couple on the planet. I hope they make you smile and feel all gooey inside!

Lydia Cole “Feels Like” Music Video
Back in February Katie and I travelled to New Zealand to film a music video for Lydia Cole. Well, the video has now been officially released so we can safely show it here on our blog.
Thanks to Lydia for believing in us enough to fly us over to your home country, and thanks for your hospitality as well. A highlight of the trip (for me anyway) was the opportunity to film in Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios. As a big Crowded House fan it was a real buzz!
We had a fantastic time in New Zealand and we definitely want to go back again one day. Next time we’d love to visit the south island.

Roger and Hayley – eShoot Clip
Roger and Hayley are a super sweet couple. They’ve been best friends with each other since primary school, so the song I chose for this little clip couldn’t be more fitting.
During Roger and Hayley’s engagement shoot I shot a little bit of video on the 5D, in between shooting stills with Katie. The main purpose of the shoot was taking photos but I wanted to test out my new Cinevate DSLR rig.
I love this clip and couldn’t wait to share it with Roger and Hayley, and everyone else! For the video ‘nerds’ I’ve included a few photos of the rig after the video.
